Beginning in 1949, NATO’s original purpose was to provide protection to European states against the growing influence of the Soviet Union. Now, more than 70 years later, NATO once again faces its old adversary as well as changing landscape of new security threats. The first major topic area in this committee will be NATO’s response to Russian aggression in Eastern Europe, apparent in Russia’s annexation of Crimea as well as its military intervention in South Ossetia. The second topic will be about how NATO should prepare itself for the global and technological challenges that it faces going forward.
